With a new superintendent (Barbara Deane-Williams / January 2005), Lyndonville Central School has shifted toward standard-based learning, with a focus on success for students of all levels. LA Webber Jr/Sr High has begun this transition by creating building goals that lead toward higher student examination scores and reading levels. LA Webber Jr/Sr High, located north of the town of Medina, NY in Orleans County, maintains an average graduating class of 60 students.

LA Webber Jr/Sr High offers a variety of classes and tracks for students. In addition to all state mandated courses, advanced mathematics, as well as advanced Spanish, and entrepreneurship classes are offered. The arts curriculum is made up of classes such as, band, chorus, photography and painting. The school just received a large grant which will allow a state-of-the-art distance learning facility to be created on-site to house many elective and advanced courses.

Athletic opportunities (at the modified, JV and Varsity levels) include: soccer, basketball, wrestling, baseball, and track and field. Extra-curricular activities include: Student Council, Academic Decathlon, Primary Helpers, ski club, weightlifting club, sportsmen’s club, and business club. Academic eligibility policies are in place for grades 5 – 12, which helps to encourage students to work hard in the classroom before they are able to work hard on the field / court.

Teachers in grades 7 – 12 participate in K12planet.com, which is an online grade reporting system. It allows teachers to upload grades and assignments in order for parents to access from any computer with Internet access. The school provides parents with passwords and sign-on names, allowing them to see incomplete assignments, as well as grades for every assignment completed.

In order to increase student achievement, several things have been implemented in recent years. Workshops, taken everyday or every other day, are offered for students struggling in English Language Arts (ELA), mathematics, and social studies. In grades 5 – 8, Academic Intervention Services (AIS) are available in ELA and mathematics, with double periods given in math every other day for all students. The Academic Center, new in 2005 – 2006, allows teachers to send work for students, be it make-up work, unfinished exams or other assignments, to one of three computer labs for the student to complete during a study hall time. As previously mentioned, academic eligibility policies for grades 5 – 12 help encourage students to focus on academics before extra-curricular activities.

One parent, who moved into the district this year with two sons, was thrilled with her decision. “It is so obvious how much the staff has made my children feel welcome,” she wrote in a letter to the school. “We never imagined it’d be such an easy transition,” she continued. “Thank you for helping my sons succeed in fitting in, and helping to bring them up to grade level,” she finished. This is just one of the many success stories at LA Webber Jr/Sr High.

New Superintendent Deane-Williams has helped to focus on Special Education services, helping to incorporate new ideas and strategies to increase student success in all areas. The district also provides many opportunities to staff for continuous professional development.  This western NY public school has worked hard to improve Regents examination scores and graduation rates. Whether it’s teachers donating time to help students study for exams or staff members going on home visits to meet with parents and families, this district aims to help all students achieve the goal of graduation.

If you want a really pampering and luxurious spa experience, don't look for it in the State of Israel. The spas may be built like they're in Las Vegas, with glass and stone amenities, and the best treatments may be offered, but don't expect to feel special or warm and fuzzy all over when you're there.

The young and professional staff is always ready to serve you with a smile, unless you need help or you have a problem. Immediately the smile turns into a stiff response of “ehh, I'm sawrrry (but they're not), this iz naught pawssible.”

In Israel, you get service when they feel like giving it to you. You are allotted one towel when they have clean towels, and if you get a massage it does not mean you get refreshments or that you can use the sauna, steam room or sulfur pools.

For that you have the option of going back out to the front desk in your skimpy towel (they were out of robes) and purchasing a ticket for the sulfur pools. There, the staff that is required to wear friendly heart shaped pins declaring “we welcome you with love,” might be too busy to take care of you right away, so just wait.

And if on the way back you slip on the wet floor, don't be a baby about it.

Also, if by accident you go into the glass enclosed sulfur pool area, the mean sulfur pool lady will stop you in your tracks with a dressing down you don't deserve. No doubt former army captains are given this position.

It may not always be service with a smile when you try to make an appointment, but the mostly Russian spa technicians are extremely qualified and surprisingly sweet and friendly.

This is Israel. A hard pill to swallow but, like vitamins, it's good for you!

At the Dead Sea, in the beautiful Le Meridien David Hotel, the spa attracts hundreds of patrons. Surrounded by red mountains and the blue-green water of the Sea of Salt, it is a tranquil place. It's decorated elegantly in modern style with touches of ancient motifs, like limestone floors and clay pots. The serene surroundings that find their way indoors through the large expansive glass walls make it easy to slip into a dream and pretend to be inside an aquamarine painting set into a terracotta frame.

Water from the Dead Sea is pumped into pools inside a bright solarium where the water is heated and turns thick and slimy. Speedo-clad, silver-chested gentlemen and rubber-capped women bob in the water shoulder to shoulder like cheerios in milk, moving in slow motion, afraid to suddenly flip over and get salty water in their eyes.

The two Jacuzzis, built to accommodate six people each, hold at least ten making it impossible for a bubble to make it's way to the top. Or allow a bubbly kid in. This is the domain of native Israelis.

Americans wait for early-bird dinner, when the place gets deserted. Children, who are scared off when the pools are filled to capacity, come out to play in the float-inducing water at this time.

It's nice to be at the Dead Sea in January. Your feet don't get burned walking from your lounge chair at the pool to the restrooms and you don't have to hide your water bottle from the sun to prevent the water from boiling over. True, you have to put on a sweater when you're tanning but the sun feels so good. And you do get color.

There was little doubt Randy Orton and Umaga were meant to destroy Triple H. His old friend Shawn Michaels, however, wouldn't let it happen.

Michaels broke up the handicap match that pitied The Game against The WWE Champion and Samoan Bulldozer as the two mercilessly double teamed him with multiple shots in the corner.

Triple H came out fighting at the start, at one time knocking Umaga out of the ring so he could focus on Orton. Umaga returned before Triple H could hit the Pedigree, and the beatdown began until Michaels arrived.

Because of what happened, Vince McMahon suggested that Degeneration X would be reunited for one night next week.

It is unclear what ulterior motive may lie with McMahon, who arranged the handicap match because of his personal grudge with Triple H.

Earlier in the night, McMahon granted Michaels a rematch with Orton for the WWE Championship at Survivor Series. Michaels won the vote for the title match at Cyber Sunday, but Orton got himself disqualified to keep the belt.

McMahon said he was giving Michaels the match because he believes there is still a piece of his soul that is “rotten.”

Kelly Kelly Gets Treat and Trick

RAW fans were treated to a Divas Halloween costume battle royal, but they didn't see a RAW Diva win.

SmackDown's Victoria looked to be the favorite because of her costume, as she was dressed in a huge sumo wrestler suit. She was one of three women remaining, and it took both Torrie Wilson and Kelly Kelly to throw her out of the ring. Kelly then threw Wilson out from behind to get the win.

The Philadelphia crowd may have been disappointed that Wilson didn't win, as she was dressed as an Eagles football player.

Kelly didn't have much time to celebrate her win. Women's Champion Beth Phoenix, who wasn't in the battle royal, came out and delivered a massive elevated slam to Kelly.

During the match, more bad blood may have developed between Mickie James and Melina. The two former champions fought on the outer apron, and Melina sacrificed herself with a leaping facebuster on James to the floor.

Rhodes and Holly a Team?

Cody Rhodes was able to team with his biggest foe, Hardcore Holly, and beat the “World's Greatest Tag Team.” Holly still didn't seem that impressed with the youngster.

Rhodes got the pin on Charlie Haas while Holly fought Shelton Benjamin outside the ring.

Holly started the match, and Haas and Benjamin isolated him in their corner with multiple tags. Holly broke free with an Irish whip and drop kick, then tagged Rhodes, who immediately attacked Haas with a flying elbow off the corner.

When Benjamin broke up an attempted Rhodes pin, Holly rushed in and knocked him out of the ring. While the two battled outside, Rhodes hit Haas with a DDT to end it.

After the match, Holly left the ring without even shaking his partner's hand.

Holly came to Rhodes' aid last week when Haas and Benjamin jumped Rhodes following his win over Benjamin. Holly had beaten Rhodes three times in before that.

Coach Humiliated

Jonathan Coachman suffered an embarrassing loss to Hornswoggle, thanks to some help from the match's guest referee – Mick Foley.

Coachman didn't appear happy when Foley came out. At one point, while he had Hornswoggle trapped in a corner, he appeared to inadvertently hit Foley in the eye, but then intentionally hit him from behind. He then tried to hit the Hornswoggle with a steel chair, but Foley grabbed the chair and gave Coachman an elbow to the face.

Foley then gave a miniature Mr. Socko to Hornswoggle, who grabbed Coachman in the groin with his sock covered hand. He then hit a Frogsplash from the top corner and got the surprising pinfall.

Lance Cade got a win against Paul London, but the bigger story came when the Highlanders attacked London and Brian Kendrick afterward.

London appeared to have momentum at one point, delivering an atomic drop and hurricanrana, but Cade countered by throwing London out of the ring. Cade's tag partner Trevor Murdoch approached London, but Kendrick stopped him.

London then tried to win with a sunset flip, but Cade rolled out and hit a power slam to get the pin.

After the match, Robbie and Rory came out and hit London and Kendrick with springboard suplexes. It appeared they used the two as a message to Cade and Murdoch, the World Tag Team Champions.

Jeff Hardy made D.H. Smith 2-0 to start his WWE career in their tag match with Carlito and Mr. Kennedy.

Hardy got the pin on Carlito following a Twist of Fate and Swanton Bomb. Smith did his part in making sure Kennedy stayed out of the ring. Kennedy broke up an earlier pin then attacked Smith, but Smith avoided a running slam and Kennedy fell to the floor.

DX won't be the only fan favorites returning next Monday. Word is that Stone Cold Steve Austin will be appearing when RAW comes to Los Angeles, possibly to confront Santino Marella.

Marella has spent weeks ridiculing Austin's movie “The Condemned.” He said he would have confronted Austin at Cyber Sunday, but his travel plans were messed up and he couldn't make it.

The KC Chief's hold their training camp at the University of Wisconsin at River Falls (UWRF). This past summer we spent a week at training camp in River Falls, Wisconsin. It was amazing, you have access to the players and it's very entertaining.

River Falls is a small town right across the Minnesota Wisconsin boarder. It has a branch of the University of Wisconsin in it and a very nice downtown area. The town rolls out the red carpet for the Chief's players and fans during training camp.

During training camp they typically hold two a days. This means that there is a practice in the morning and another in the afternoon. All practices are open to the public at no charge. You are able to stand outside a short wooden fence to watch the practices. I suggest that if you do not want to sit on the metal bleachers that are at either end of the two field practice area that you bring your own chair. During practice the different parts of the team are usually split and working on drills. You may find the kickers practicing field goals while the quarterbacks practice throwing to the receivers and the linemen run blocking drills on another part of the field.

There is a concession stand that sells chips, candy, hot dogs and drinks. They also have an area where you can purchase training camp merchandise including autograph footballs and Sharpie markers. All of this is staffed by students of UWRF. The students also take pictures and conduct interviews of people watching practice. This is all published on the UWRF website. The public is allowed to take photos of the practices however, video cameras are not allowed.

After each morning practice a handful of players stand along the fence nearest the parking lot. They sign autographs and take pictures with the fans who have been there. There is no set schedule of who comes out to sign but there is always someone. We were lucky enough to meet Tamba Hali, Tony Gonzalez, Brandon Flowers, and Glenn Dorsey during our time along with many other players. The interaction with the players is a wonderful thing that most people do not get to experience. After one practice Turk McBride was signing autographs and my eight year old son asked if he would sign his hat. Turk smiled great big and told him that he would only sign his hat if my son would sign his shirt. He stood there while my son wrote his name in Sharpie on his shirt and Turk told him how excited he was that he was getting an autograph and how he would never wash his shirt. Those moments are priceless as a parent and as a child.

We were there for children's day, family night and for the Minnesota Vikings scrimmage practice. On children's day they have games and face painting. KC Wolf is there for the kids to meet and take pictures with them. They also have drawings for prizes. Family night is a much larger event. This past year they had the NFL Experience there and the kids were able to go through different stations and were given a score based on their ability to catch, throw, kick and run an obstacle course. They have sky divers that came down onto the field. At a set time all of the players come out and line the football field and sign autographs for 20 minutes. My son was able to get Larry Johnson's at this point and many others. After the autograph session they hold a practice under the lights at the main stadium. Once practice is over they have a fireworks show as well. Each year the Minnesota Vikings either make the trip to River Falls or the Chiefs make the trip to Mankato, Minnesota for a scrimmage practice. This event is well attended and has a very reasonable admission fee. They run drills and it gives everyone a chance to see both teams. Prepare to be there early and to wait quite some time in the bleachers if you plan on attending.

We were unable to stay in River Falls so we stayed in nearby Hudson, WI. It was only a 10 minute drive to UWRF. You are also only about 30 minutes from most attractions in the Minneapolis St. Paul area in Minnesota. If you get a chance to go to the Chief's training camp I recommend it. It is a wonderful experience for people young and old. You will find the people friendly and the team more than happy to meet its fans.

At eight months old, my daughter was still not sleeping through the night. It was not until I took her for her six-month well baby check up that I realized her constant waking was abnormal, and eventually became alarming. She woke up every one to three hours screaming as if she was terrified, sometimes almost seeming disoriented. After researching night terrors and nightmares, I was able to rule out night terrors. 

At the six-month check up, the nurse practitioner instructed me on how to teach Baby to fall back asleep on her own. She suggested letting her cry for 15 minutes at a time. After three hours, she should fall asleep. While my husband was prepared to try this, I thought it was cruel. After researching infant sleep issues, I decided to try The Baby Whisperer's method. This technique involved laying her back down every time she stood up in the crib (my record was 117 times). 

Although this did help her to fall asleep on her own for naps during the day (which, by the way, only lasted for 30 minutes at the most), it did not help during the nighttime episodes. I diligently stuck to this method for almost a month. However, Baby was not sleeping any better during the night. I searched the Internet, I read books, and I asked every parent I spoke to for advice. Finally, I decided to let her cry it out. My husband and I tried this for two weeks and it did not help. I do not recommend this method for children this young. My daughter not only became terrified of her crib, but also the sight of her room. We had to do something. Baby woke up every morning looking exhausted! She needed a nap within one hour of getting up in the morning. 

The next step was to schedule a visit with our pediatrician. The doctor refused to even listen to my concerns; she simply stated that Baby was teething. Throughout my research, a prominent concern was that many parents were also not taken seriously by their pediatrician.   Once again, we were left without any ideas. Someone suggested we take her to a chiropractor. By this time, we were ready to try anything. After three adjustments, Baby still was not sleeping better, but she was properly aligned! And last but not least, we heard about how homeopathy helped a woman with nightmares. So, that is what we did. 

That was one month ago. Within a week of Baby's first treatment, she was only waking three times a night. The horrible screaming episodes have completely stopped. The doctor gave us enough of the remedy to treat her at home according to her need and his instructions. Baby now only wakes twice a night and it is my honest opinion it is because she is hungry. Her sleep schedule is bedtime at 8:00 PM, wake for feeding at 11:00PM and 4:00AM, then wake up in the morning between 7:30 and 8:30AM. She takes fewer naps during the day, but when she does take a nap, she curls up on the floor with her blanket and puts herself to sleep. Who could ask for more? 

The basic premise of homeopathy is to teach the body to “heal” itself. For example, one of Baby's symptoms was a sweaty head while sleeping. Homeopathy “tells” the head to stop sweating in that way. When a homeopathic doctor sees a patient, the doctor will review all symptoms. These symptoms are usually things that most people do not even consider as something being wrong. A few of Baby's symptoms included waking constantly, sweaty head, biting shoes, and red cheeks. As the body is being treated, other symptoms may arise. During baby's treatment, she developed a cough that turned into a cold. It was not a reaction to the treatment, but rather some abnormality that her body was repressing. Essentially, the remedies given help to reveal things a body is inhibiting, and then teaches the body to deal with those issues. 

One month after our first visit to the Wellness Center, Baby's symptoms and behaviors were reviewed again. The doctor gave her another remedy to assist the body in caring for the new symptoms that were previously hidden. I highly recommend anyone who is having problems with their children to visit a homeopathic center. It has helped us when nothing or no one else could.
